Every week, I get a version of the same message from someone in a panic:
“My Epson printer just froze mid-job and now it’s showing Epson printer error code 0xF1. What do I do?”
The problem isn’t that there’s no information out there about this.

Power Down Properly — Don’t Just Pull the Plug
Turn the printer off using its own power button first, wait a few seconds, then unplug it from the wall. This lets the printhead park itself correctly instead of freezing mid-travel, which matters for the next step.
Open Everything Up and Look
Open the top cover, the paper tray, and the rear feed if your model has one. You’re looking for:
- Torn paper scraps
- A stray label or sticker that peeled off inside the machine
- Small broken plastic fragments in the feed gears
If you find debris in the gears, don’t force the printer to run — remove it by hand, gently rotating the gears if needed to free it.
Check the Cartridges
Remove and reseat each ink cartridge. Look for:
- Dried ink around the contact pins
- A cartridge that isn’t clicking fully into place
- Visible cracks or damage from a recent installation
Wipe the gold contact pins with a dry, lint-free cloth if they look dirty. A surprising number of 0xF1 errors trace back to a cartridge that’s seated at a slight angle.
Clean the Encoder Strip
This is the step almost everyone skips, and it fixes more 0xF1 errors than anything else on this list. Inside the printer, running horizontally along the path the printhead travels, there’s a thin transparent plastic strip. Ink mist settles on it over time, and once it’s dirty enough, the printer can’t track the printhead’s position accurately.
Wipe it gently with a dry microfiber cloth. Don’t use water or alcohol unless the ink buildup is heavy — and if it is, use the smallest amount possible and let it fully dry before powering back on.
Let It Cool
If the error showed up after a long print run, especially a high-volume batch job, give the printer 15–20 minutes to cool down before restarting. Overheated printheads are a real and common trigger, particularly on EcoTank models running large ink volumes.
Update the Driver and Firmware
Once the hardware side is ruled out, go to Epson’s official support site, search your exact model number, and download the latest driver and firmware. An outdated driver can occasionally cause the printer to misreport its own hardware status, which shows up as a 0xF1 even when nothing is physically wrong.
Reset and Test
Plug the printer back in, power it on, and run a single test page before sending a full job. If the error clears, print something small first — not your entire batch — to confirm it’s actually resolved.
If None of That Works
If you’ve gone through all six steps and the error keeps coming back on the same job or the same time interval, you’re likely looking at a worn or damaged part most often the encoder strip itself or the carriage assembly rather than something you can clean your way out of. At that point, a certified repair technician or an Epson support ticket is the faster path. Don’t keep forcing print jobs through a printer that’s repeatedly throwing a hardware fault; that’s how a fixable issue turns into a replace-the-printer issue.
How I Prevent It Now
After the second time this cost me a production morning, I built a habit around it: wipe the encoder strip every couple of months, never let the printer run a huge batch job back-to-back without a short cooldown, and reseat cartridges every time I swap one instead of assuming it clicked in right. None of that takes more than five minutes, and I haven’t seen a 0xF1 error since.
