I did everything wrong with my pothos and somehow thrived anyway.
I ignored it for three weeks. I watered it with whatever was left in my glass, sometimes coffee, sometimes just tap water gone flat. I never rotated it. I definitely never fed it. And yet it threw out leaf after leaf, each one bigger than the last, like it was personally offended by the idea of struggling.
Meanwhile my fiddle leaf fig — the plant I actually researched, actually bought a $40 grow light for, actually talked to like it was a coworker I needed something from — sat there. Stalled. Dropped two leaves in protest and made me feel, honestly, a little unqualified to be trusted with anything that photosynthesizes.
Which is exactly the kind of thing that happens when you follow plant advice from people who talk like every leaf is a referendum on your competence but who were lucky enough to start with a plant that basically wanted to live.
So I went back to basics. Not the influencer basics — misting for humidity, “just talk to it,” a rotating cast of $30 fertilizer bottles with names like botanical energy drinks. The actual basics. Light, water, roots, soil, air. The stuff that was true before anyone monetized it.
Here’s what actually moved the needle, in the order I noticed it.
Light Is the Real Fertilizer
I used to think fertilizer was the growth lever. It isn’t. Light is. Photosynthesis is the engine — fertilizer just supplies raw material for an engine that’s already running. A plant sitting in low light with premium fertilizer is still a plant sitting in low light.
Most houseplants that “won’t grow” are actually just underlit. Not dying — surviving. There’s a difference, and it’s the difference between a plant that pushes out new leaves every couple weeks and one that just sort of exists, un-changing, like furniture.
The fix isn’t complicated. Move the plant closer to the window, or turn it so a different side faces the light every week or two, because plants lean and leaning wastes energy that should be going into new growth. If your space is genuinely dim, a basic LED grow light does more for growth speed than anything in a spray bottle ever will.
Water Less, But Water Smarter
My mom always said she loved her plants “too much,” and by that she meant she watered them into root rot. I did the same thing for years — treating thirst like something to prevent rather than something to respond to.
Roots need oxygen as much as they need water. Constantly soggy soil suffocates them, and suffocated roots can’t pull up nutrients even if the nutrients are sitting right there. That’s the quiet reason so many “well-fed” plants still grow slowly — the roots are drowning, not starving.
Stick a finger two inches into the soil before you water. Dry, water. Damp, wait. It sounds almost too simple to matter, but it’s the single habit that separated my thriving plants from my struggling ones once I actually paid attention to it instead of watering on a schedule out of guilt.
Feed It Something, Just Not Constantly
Plants do need nutrients — nitrogen for leaf growth, phosphorus for roots, potassium for overall resilience — and potting soil runs out of these faster than people expect, usually within a couple months for actively growing plants.
You don’t need the influencer fertilizer collection. A diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer every two to four weeks during spring and summer, when plants are actually in active growth, covers most of it. Some people swear by natural boosts — used coffee grounds worked lightly into topsoil for a small nitrogen bump, crushed eggshells for calcium, even the water left over from boiling vegetables (unsalted, cooled) for trace minerals. These aren’t magic. They’re mild, slow-release supplements, and they work best alongside good light and correct watering, not instead of them.
One thing worth knowing: skip fertilizing in fall and winter for most houseplants. Growth naturally slows as daylight drops, and feeding a dormant plant doesn’t speed it up — it just builds up salts in the soil that can burn the roots.
Repot Before the Roots Beg You To
My fiddle leaf fig, it turned out, wasn’t struggling because of light at all. It was rootbound — coiled so tightly in its original nursery pot that it had nowhere left to grow and nothing left to draw from.
Roots circling the bottom of the pot, water running straight through without soaking in, growth that’s flatlined for months — these are the signs. Most houseplants do better moved into a pot one size up every twelve to eighteen months, with fresh potting mix, not just refilled dirt in the same tired container. Fresh soil means fresh nutrients and better drainage, and a bit more room means roots that can actually expand instead of strangling themselves.
I repotted the fig in April. It’s pushed out four new leaves since. I’d like to say that was strategy. It was mostly relief.
Humidity and Airflow Matter More Than People Admit
Most popular houseplants — pothos, monstera, philodendron, calathea — originate from tropical understories, which means they’re built for humidity levels most homes simply don’t have, especially with heating or air conditioning running.
Low humidity doesn’t kill most plants outright, but it does slow them down, since the plant spends more energy managing water loss through its leaves than it spends growing new ones. Grouping plants together, setting pots on a tray of pebbles and water, or running a small humidifier nearby all raise humidity without much effort. Stagnant air is its own quiet problem too — a bit of airflow, even just an open window occasionally, helps prevent the fungal issues that thrive in still, damp conditions.
What I’d Tell Someone Starting Today
Skip the fertilizer aisle for now. Check the light first. Check the soil moisture second. Everything after that is optimization, not survival.
My pothos never got the $40 grow light or the fertilizer schedule. It got a decent window and a person who eventually stopped drowning it out of anxiety. My fiddle leaf fig needed all of it — the light, the feeding, and eventually just more room to grow into.
I don’t think there’s a universal lesson in that, other than the obvious one: different plants need different things, and most of us find that out the expensive way before we find it out the simple way.
